Autoimmune diseases are listed as the third most common group of diseases in the United States after cancer and heart disease. These diseases affect approximately 5% to 8% of the population or 14 to 22 million persons with 75% of this occuring in women. Among physicians, researches and other health care providers, the list of diseases numbered in the autoimmune category varies from a few disease entities to as many as 80 diseases. Just as there is difficulty and diversity with the recognition of which disease entities fit into the autoimmune category, it is also at times difficult establishing a diagnosis of autoimmune disease.
